Planting in the rain

It was a grey, dank Saturday but volunteers were undeterred by the conditions and another stretch of hedge was planted. We have wonderful mix of native tree species, which have been propagated in UK as well. These selections will promote local wildlife and provide more shelter, habitat and food for a wide number of birds, small mammals and insects.

So far the focus has been on widening existing hedgerows, which greatly increases their wildlife value, as well as planting up field corners. We are using a randomized selection of field maple, service berry, hazel, black thorn, hawthorn, guilder rose, and many more. We will be adding tree guards but most likely not to all the trees, so we can observe to what degree using them is essential.

These planting events will be happening over the winter period until the trees start to bud and grow for the new season. Anyone is welcome to come along and help, the land is fairly steep so it is a good workout, but there are gentler jobs available for those who are a little less energetic.
